Abortion

GifMike:  Yikes.

Locke:  Abortions should be illegal.  There should be no debate about when a life begins.  At the very moment of conception when the sperm and egg become one they are a human being;   And therefore as a living human being they deserve all the rights granted to any one of us.  You can no more end the life of that child than you can a person of any age.

Demosthenes:  You know my views.  A womans right to make choices about her own body is sacrosanct.

Locke:  That’s the point, it’s not her body she’s making choices about…it’s a childs’.   Nobody has the inherent right to destroy another life;  And one of those rights is to be protected from being murdered, at least in America.  If the growing child were to grow outside of the body in full view we wouldn’t be having this debate.

Demothenes:  I’m sure every country has laws against murder Locke.  But while the fetus is inside her body it directly affects her health and safety;  So as long as the child cannot support it’s own life  the choices regarding that life are hers.   Pregnancy is an heroic act.  You are risking your own life for another, and you cannot legislate that a woman risk or sacrifice herself for someone else.

Locke:  We can send people to war.  The draft maybe gone, but believe me in a dire enough situation our government would bring it back.   We do that because sometimes we have to sacrifice some citizens to protect others.

Demothenes:  Well again, no you can’t.  That’s why they had to come up with the conscientious objector laws, because you may be able to force people to serve in a time of war, but when it comes down to it you cannot compel an individual to kill or be killed if they absoulutly refuse.   That puts other soldiers in danger.  At first the military DID put most of them in military prisons, but now they just place them on supply side so they can still be of use.

Locke:  I’m not sure i agree with that, but I’m going to defer comment until I do a little research.  Either way, regardless of the risks of pregnancy which I’ll concede,  you must admit the woman put herself in that situation in the first place.  You don’t want kids?  Don’t have sex!  Or at least unprotected sex.   Why is her future comfort placed above the rights of another soul!?  And what about the fathers right to choose?

GifMike:  I’m not much for a fathers rights before birth.  I think this is mostly a womans issue and it makes me sick when men feel they have the right to comment.  No womb no opinion.  If women or the government were to suddenly decide, as Monty Python put it , that “Every sperm is sacred” and they decided to pass a law againt a mans’ right to toss off a few trouser monkeys every now and then what do you think our (Mens) response would be?

Demosthenes:   Why do you have to try to inject something goofy into these conversations?    And (To Locke) I’m not saying it’s more important.  I’m saying that the government shouldn’t be able to interfere while the baby is in the womb.  The child is as dependant on her as are her own limbs.  And GifMike that seemed to be a very elaborate way of saying you have no opinion.  Or perhaps a cowardly way of refusing to state one.

GifMike: lol .  I guess if your asking me if I personally could have one,  I’d have to say no.  Especially if I planned on having kids at all someday.   If you liken it to a limb and I cut off my arm because it was making my ass fat, or it was just inconvenient, or I didn’t feel I was ready to properly care for an arm;   I would forever picture a ghost arm there.  It would endure to remind me and quietly ask me why I kept the other arm but not him.  In that way I find the entire subject of abortion to be extremely disarming.  ha ha.

Demosthenes:  Oh GifMike…no

Locke:  (Silence)
